HER STORY

ALPHA FEMALE LEAGUES was founded in 2015 by Barbara Davis, a single mother of four daughters. She wanted her children to have opportunities to participate in school and community activities, including sports, but financial constraints often made participation difficult. In response, Barbara volunteered to coach her daughters’ teams, developed programs, and invited their friends to participate. Through word of mouth, the programs steadily grew. In April 2017, Alpha Female Leagues began its journey as a nonprofit organization, delivering programs in schools, recreation centers, and other community event spaces.

In April 2020, Barbara was diagnosed with stage 3B breast cancer. Despite this challenge, her determination and ambition have remained steadfast. As she continues her journey with metastatic breast cancer, she has become an advocate who educates and empowers women who are facing—or have survived—the disease. Now in her sixth year of this fight, Barbara remains positive and committed to expanding TAL, strengthening its programs, supporting its participants, and serving the community.

ABOUT THE LEAGUES

THE ALPHA LEAGUES is a positive youth development program that introduces young people to the best traditions of Greek-letter organization culture: leadership, scholarship, service, character, teamwork, and lifelong brotherhood and sisterhood. The program helps participants build confidence, strengthen academic habits, serve their communities, and develop the skills to lead with integrity.

Through meaningful service and leadership experiences, participants gain a deeper appreciation for community involvement, personal responsibility, and collaboration.

Our purpose is clear: to create positive youth development opportunities and meaningful life experiences rooted in leadership, scholarship, service, character, teamwork, and culture while fostering lifelong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.

THE HISTORY

ALPHA FEMALE LEAGUES, DBA THE ALPHA LEAGUES, was founded by Barbara Davis in 2015 as a youth Greek-inspired organization and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in April 2017. As the needs of our community have evolved, so has our organization. Although we are growing and rebranding, we remain firmly committed to creating a foundation where young women of color and others can grow and thrive. We have expanded our programs to welcome all young people, regardless of color, race, or national origin.

OUR FUTURE

TAL will always be dedicated to developing strong leaders, strengthening communities, and fostering unity. As we expand and rebrand, women and sisterhood remain central to our mission, along with our continued commitment to uplifting women of color.

As we introduce new programs, we will continue offering our Greek-inspired youth program in a club format. Growth requires change, and meaningful change creates new opportunities for growth. As of 2026, we have expanded our programming to include young men, while also beginning to develop programs and services for seniors and veterans.

Through community service, acts of kindness, ambition, and a commitment to excellence, TAL has achieved significant growth. We look forward to reaching new heights as we expand our programs and build lasting community partnerships.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

The Alpha Leagues strengthens communities by creating safe, supportive spaces where young people can discover their potential, build confidence, and develop meaningful relationships with peers and caring adults. Through leadership development, academic encouragement, character education, and service opportunities, participants gain practical skills that support success in school, at home, and in their future careers.

Community service is central to TAL’s impact. Participants learn to recognize local needs, work collaboratively, and contribute through acts of kindness and volunteer service. These experiences help young people understand that leadership is not defined only by achievement, but also by responsibility, empathy, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

By partnering with families, schools, recreation centers, volunteers, and community organizations, TAL expands access to positive youth development experiences and builds a stronger network of support around each participant. As programming grows to include young men, seniors, and veterans, the organization will continue fostering connection across generations, strengthening community pride, and creating opportunities for people to learn, serve, and thrive together.
